Goldberg criticises Franco and Hathaway

Whoopi Goldberg has criticised James Franco and Anne Hathaway's Sunday night Oscar hosting presentation.

Speaking on Monday's episode of The View on ABC, Goldberg said that Franco and Hathaway failed to take charge of the awards show.

"You've got to get people who understand a live show," Goldberg said.

She added: "The first few minutes of that show is yours. You have to recognise two things. You have to recognise - like after Melissa Leo said [the f-word]... when things happen like that you have to be able to come and lift the audience out of their shock and move the show forward. I felt like last night there was no-one in charge."

The comedian continued: "I like James Franco a lot. I like Anne Hathaway a lot. But this is a show that, it's on you to keep it going. It's on you. You have to be able to surf in this show. And I didn't think they surfed as much as they could have."

Goldberg has hosted the Oscars four times.

James Franco and Madonna Both Hosting Oscars After Parties

James Franco and Madonna Both Hosting Oscars After Parties

Madonna and James Franco will each host an Oscars after party this Sunday, and it sounds like there might be a friendly rivalry in the works! We'll have to wait and see which party celebs pick, after attending the show, then the Governor's Ball, THEN the Vanity Fair after party.

While Madonna, 52, boasts A-list DJs Paul Oakenfold and Zen Freeman, as well as a royal theme – in anticipation of the success of The King's Speech, nominated for 12 awards – at her marquee, the party is reportedly being snubbed by many for 127 Hours star James’ more “cool” gathering.

An insider explained to the Daily Mail newspaper: "Franco’s so beyond cool that a lot of people who would have scooted up to Madonna’s will more than likely do the Governors Ball, Vanity Fair and then James’s bash, because they’re all quite close."

Traditionally winners, nominees and presenters go from the Governors' Ball at Los Angeles' Kodak Centre to Vanity Fair’s bash at Sunset Towers before heading on to after parties.

James Franco refused to host Oscars!

James Franco revealed, he had refused to host Oscars in the beginning but changed his mind later on.

Now this comes as a shocker. We've got to know that Hollywood heartthrob James Franco was in two minds when asked to host Oscars'2011.

James recently revealed he initially said no to host the Oscars because he was too surprised to be offered the coveted role!

Franco revealed: "I was very very surprised, and my initial reaction was 'No.' Then I thought about it and I thought, 'Well, why not? Because I'll look bad?' Well, I don't care. I'm happy to take the criticism. Even if it's 'The Worst Oscars Ever,' I don't care. It's one night of the year."

He further added, "There might be some singing, there might be some dancing", dropping hints on how he and co-host Anne Hathaway will try to make the event most entertaining.

Apart from hosting the awards ceremony, Franco could win an award for Best Actor for his role in new film 127 Hours. And if he does, he said he already has a back-up plan in place – his friend and publicist Barry Johnson will accept it for him.

They're both well-known Hollywood talents, so it comes as quite the pleasant news that Nicole Kidman and James Franco are teaming up on Broadway.

According to reports, the “Australia” actress and the “127 Hours” star have made plans to appear in a revival of “Sweet Bird of Youth” next fall.

The much-anticipated show follows a drifter using an aging movie star to break into film.

James Franco: Don't be scared to see '127 Hours'

James Franco: Don't be scared to see '127 Hours'

James Franco arrives for the Golden Globe Awards Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, in Beverly Hills, Calif.

By Matt Sayles, AP

A breathless James Franco was rushing along Chapel Street this morning in New Haven, Conn., where he is a Ph.D candidate at Yale.

"They wanted me to go to New York this morning," says the actor. "But I told them I wasn't going to miss class."

He was still processing the news of his Oscar nomination for playing trapped hiker Aaron Ralston in the harrowing 127 Hours. "Yeah, it feels good," he told USA TODAY's Susan Wloszczyna. "Yeah, when I look back at it I can say, 'Hey, I was nominated.'"

Reminded that he also has to work the night of the ceremony Feb. 27 as co-host with Anne Hathaway, he laughed and said, "Yeah, I have double duty. There are a lot more nominees than there are nominees who hosted the same year."

James Franco also made another plea for people not to be scared away by the fact that he has to cut off his arm in the movie. "It is not a gratuitous scene and the fact it is scaring people away is a crime." To accommodate those who have changed their minds, the film will open wider on Friday.

James Franco's plans for the rest of the day? "I'll be going to class and then some homework."

What, no celebration? "I'm doing The Daily Show tonight." Maybe Jon Stewart can slip him some bubbly.
